Carnelian is reddish orange in color and is a variety of Chalcedony in the Quartz family. The darker reddish brown color of this stone is known as Sard.  These names are often used interchangeably as they are both a variety of chalcedony and the colors can vary greatly from pale orange to almost black. Although rare, this stone can also be a yellowish color.
